Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display (PODD) is normally a book or device that contains symbols and words to support communication between people with complex communication needs and their communication partners, whether that’s carers, family, friends or support workers. Firstchance staff have had great success introducing PODD with some of the children we support as evidenced from the information shared by one of our speech pathologists.

Leroy* received his PODD book today. Mum came into school and we spent two hours practicing PODD and learning about it with her and a teacher's aid. I've never seen a mum more proud or a child with so much to say! Leroy said thank you about a thousand times! He also used his PODD to tell mum 'I love you', ask questions, answer questions and talk about things he liked. For almost the whole time he kept using his key chain to tell us he had more to say. He told us his name and then asked me what mine was, he asked to play with blocks and bubbles and navigated through the PODD so incredibly well. He put the strap straight on at lunch time and went out to show all of his friends... It was just beautiful! When we were walking to the office for his medication he kept trying to tell us he had more to say and point to his book… he just wouldn't stop! Mum and the teacher's aid started to add lots of words into the blank spaces already today and use them immediately with Leroy.
