6 small images of children on bikes during our beginners bike group program

Firstchance’s recent school holiday Bike Group has wrapped up, bringing with it a wave of joyful milestones, newfound independence, and heartfelt praise from children and their families. The program, designed to help children build coordination, confidence, and social connection through supported bike riding, once again proved its impact.

Across the sessions, children used their own bikes, each at their own pace, supported by Firstchance Senior Physiotherapist Julie and Occupational Therapy Coordinator Bonnie. The focus was not only on riding skills, but also on fostering resilience, problem‑solving and a sense of accomplishment.

For all children and families, the growth was unmistakable.

Parents shared their reflections throughout the program:

  • Thank you for your kindness and patience in teaching my daughter how to ride her bike. I am bursting with pride. This program is great. I didn’t know how to break it down to teach her in a way she needed to learn.  Such a great program.

  • My daughter loved the bike group and can now independently ride her bike. She asks to go for a ride now. Thank you. We are very appreciative of this program. We are on the hunt for a new bike now.

  • The bike group was absolutely amazing! E’s is eager to hop on his bike and ride now. I can hardly hold back tears as I watch him enjoy the experience. The beginner bike program is truly commendable, with sessions tailored to meet each child’s individual goals. Great job, everyone – well done!

These personal stories highlight what makes the Bike Group so meaningful: a blend of practical skill‑building and individualised support, wrapped in a supportive, family‑centred environment.

Program facilitators were equally proud. They witnessed children take brave steps, sometimes literally as they practiced balancing, steering, stopping, and navigating small challenges independently. At the completion of the group, 100% of our participants were riding their bikes.

As Firstchance continues to deliver programs that build children’s capabilities and support families, the Bike Group stands as one of many favourites, one that brings together movement, fun, and confidence in a uniquely powerful way.

We look forward to welcoming more riders in the next program.
