What we do

About Firstchance

Firstchance is a leading not‑for‑profit early intervention service in Newcastle, NSW, dedicated to helping children aged 0–12 years with a disability and/or developmental delay to reach their full potential. Each year, we support more than 500 children and their families across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, and Port Stephens through high‑quality, evidence‑based therapy and developmental programs.

For more than 45 years, families have trusted Firstchance to provide inclusive, personalised support that makes a meaningful difference. Established in 1978, we are recognised across the Hunter region for our commitment to best practice, innovation, and positive outcomes for children with diverse developmental and physical needs.

Our Services

Our multidisciplinary team includes Allied Health professionals (Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Physiotherapy, Psychology), Specialist Educators, and Coordinators of Support. Together, we deliver tailored early intervention and therapy programs in the places where children learn best such as their: homes, early education settings, schools, and community environments.

We support children with:

  • Developmental delay
  • Autism
  • Speech and Language delay
  • Physical disabilities
  • Chromosomal and genetic conditions
  • Complex developmental needs

Our services include early intervention, therapy supports, school‑aged programs, and transition support into high school when needed.

Community Impact and Partnerships

Firstchance is proudly funded through Federal and State Government programs, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), corporate partnerships, grants, and community generosity. These partnerships enable us to deliver impactful services that strengthen families and build brighter futures for children with disability.

Our long‑standing collaborations with community organisations, educators, and sector leaders help ensure that every child receives high‑quality support grounded in the latest research and best practice.

Our Commitment

At Firstchance, our mission is simple:
Empower children. Support families. Build inclusive communities.

We believe every child deserves the chance to grow with confidence, be included, and make meaningful connections. Together with families, donors, partners, and supporters, we create opportunities for children to thrive, one small step, one big milestone, and one family at a time..

Our Vision

Is a diverse and inclusive community for children and families

Our Mission
