At Firstchance, we see every child through a strengths‑based lens, valuing their interests, abilities, and unique ways of engaging with the world. Sam’s journey is a perfect example of how meaningful progress emerges when therapy connects with what matters most to a child.

Starting With Sam’s Strengths

When Sam began OT with Mim, he brought an incredible set of strengths with him:

  • rich pretend‑play skills
  • strong imagination
  • clear interests that motivated and energised him
  • a family who encouraged exploration at his pace

These strengths formed the foundation of all their therapy sessions together.

Following His Lead Through Play

Sam’s love of cars quickly became an engaging pathway into water‑based exploration. With Sam directing the play, his OT Mim created imaginative “car wash” scenarios in the pool that naturally included small amounts of water. When Sam was ready, gentle splashes and waves were added, always in a playful, joyful way.

Another interest that emerged was Sam’s fascination with the Skibidi Toilet (if you know, you know. It's a Youtube ainimated series). While unconventional, it was meaningful to Sam and therefore became a powerful tool. Through this theme, he confidently experimented with:

  • getting his face closer to water
  • exploring face‑in‑water play
  • blowing bubbles
  • trying new sensations in his own time

Each step was child‑led and supported his growing confidence.

Small Steps, Big Confidence

By honouring Sam’s strengths and interests, gradual shifts began to appear in everyday routines. Sam started:

  • engaging more comfortably in bath time
  • tolerating water on his face and ears
  • feeling calmer during hair washing
  • exploring water play with curiosity rather than hesitation

These changes happened because Sam felt safe, in control, and supported.

Celebrating Family & Community Moments

One of the most meaningful changes has been the way Sam and his family now experience water together. They’ve started visiting the pool for leisure, creating shared moments of joy, connection, and confidence.

Sam is also building his swimming skills,  another example of how his bravery and strengths continue to grow.

Why This Story Matters

Sam’s journey highlights what we deeply believe at Firstchance:

  • Every child has strengths that can guide their development.
  • Play is a powerful tool for learning.
  • Interests are meaningful and should lead the way.
  • Families are central to every success.
  • Growth happens when children feel safe, supported, and understood.

We’re incredibly proud of Sam and the confidence he’s built through imagination, play, and his own remarkable strengths. 💙
