Firstchance has worked alongside the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation to develop a suite of video modelling resources to assist children on the autism spectrum and visual learners, who want to refine their language, social, self-help, and play skills.

Research has shown that for visual learners, video modelling is a highly effective way to teach new skills. For children on the autism spectrum, video modelling can be more motivating and less threatening than face-to-face modelling. It also lets children focus on one aspect of a skill or behaviour at a time using a medium they are comfortable and confident in.  The resource enables children to watch the video in a safe environment as often as needed (independently) to learn a new skill.

Firstchance views this project as an opportunity to develop a series of short videos to reinforce what is learnt in support sessions with the child and family. Thus, providing children with a greater opportunity to practice and revise.

We couldn't be prouder to share with you one of the videos from the suite of videos the Firstchance team has produced with the financial support of the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation and with the expert production of Excalibur Videos, and the talented volunteer actors. They gave up their time to support their peers.

We couldn't be more excited to share with you our Self-Care video. The aim of the video is to support children to enhance their personal hygiene skills by learning about germs, washing hands, covering coughs and sneezes, and wearing a mask.
